On this page you will find announcements pertaining to the course. Please check this page daily for updates or important instructions. This will be the main way that the instructor will communicate with the class as a whole outside of the class meetings.
NEW November 30: OFFICE HOURS FOR EXAM WEEK: Monday and Thursday 2:00-4:00. I will be in and out Tuesday and Wednesday, so you can try to catch me, or email me to see whether I’m in.
November 27:

- NEXT CLASS: we will be doing COURSE EVALUATIONS and REVIEW FOR THE EXAM.
- I also have all of your assignments graded and ready to return to you. After Wednesday, you’ll have to come to see me in office hours to collect your graded work.
- I will be posting revised office hours for the exam period shortly.
November 19:

Do you know some outstanding undergraduate or graduate student leaders that should be recognized for their contributions? Please read on…
Since 2012, the 3M National Student Fellowship Committee has selected 10 student leaders a year from institutions across the country to be recognized for their past efforts and future leadership contributions. At UNBC, we have many great student leaders, and the 3M Fellowship is one way we can recognize such students.
This award is open to undergraduate and graduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Full-time student
- Completed one full-time semester of study

According to the 3M process, students may self-identify and ask faculty members to provide a nomination letter. Faculty members can also approach student leaders to consider being nominated.
If your students (and you, as a nominator) are interested in submitting an application, support from the Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology will be available to assist the application development. The 3M Student Leadership applications will be reviewed internally in early December. All applicants will then be provided additional feedback and successful internal applicants will be provided support by the CTLT to complete the process. Successful applications will be submitted by UNBC to the 3M Awards Committee.

Oct 20: I have added a link to the Library Citation Help access page to the “Links/Docs” page. You can go there to ask our Librarian, Annelise Dowd, questions about MLA citation. I have also added a link there to the Purdue University OWL MLA citation page for online writing help, which includes reference sheets for citation styles.

NOTE: I will be away next week at a conference. Dr. Hutchings will be invigilating your mid-term exam on Wednesday. I will attempt to set up some on-line office hours, but these will depend on my internet access. Check this space for updates. I will of course be checking my email.

SEPT 18:
TEXTBOOK LEFT BEHIND IN CLASS on Sept 13: I have given it to Kathy Shaw, the English Admin Assistant whose office is ADMIN 3073 (Charles McCaffrey Hall) where my office is. Please collect it during business hours. This book has not yet been collected. Please come get it so that Kathy can get it off of her desk;- ADDITIONAL: I have added the PPT “Lanyer and Marvell” to the “Links/Docs” page. The slips of paper handed out in class today should be basically the same as the questions on the PPT. We will use them as the basis of group work for Wednesday’s class.
- JIGGING THE SCHEDULE: Because we are one class behind, I will move the practice sight passage workshop to SEPT 25;
- DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Remember that Discussion Questions are due on the day that reading is assigned on the “Readings and Assignments Schedule” regardless of where we are in class;
- HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: If you did not pick up your homework assignment today, you will need to work on Homework #2 as best you can and collect #1 on Wednesday when you hand in #2. You will have an opportunity to revise based on the feedback, so don’t panic.
- Kudos and Feedback: I feel that the class is working very well on the questions we have been posting in class. If you would like to give me any feedback on this kind of exercise, feel free to drop me an email, or, if you’d like to do so anonymously, you can leave it with Kathy Shaw (ADMIN 3073–Charles McCaffrey Hall). Just be sure to put a title on it so that I know what the feedback refers to.
SEPT 13:
- I have corrected the DUE DATE for the ESSAY OUTLINE (Option A) on the “Assignments” page. The ESSAY OUTLINE (Option A) is due OCTOBER 23;
- I have corrected the DATE of the MIDTERM and reposted the “Readings and Assignments Schedule” on that page. The Midterm will be OCTOBER 11;
- HOMEWORK FOR DONNE: Choose one of the question slides from the PPT “John Donne and the Embodied Soul” (on the Links/Docs page) and write some notes to answer the question. We will begin next class with this exercise;

SEPT 11: For NEXT CLASS (Sept 13), please review the REMIX ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION.
Also, if you felt a little bit lost or groundless in class today, do not panic. This searching and groping for ideas is NOT A BUG; IT’S A FEATURE. This is the PROCESS of learning. Remember, LEARNING IS A VERB! Just keep at it and you will get farther down the road each time you set out.
So, for your LEARNING JOURNAL entry for this week, you might wish to write about the experience of grappling with these texts, or working with others in a group, or doing the “Think, Pair” part of “Think, Pair, Share.” What aspects of this early exercise did you find the most difficult? Did you find a way to make some progress? Were you a bit intimidated? Excited? Unmoved? Why? Do you feel different at the end of Wednesday’s class than you did at the start of Monday’s? What changed, or didn’t?
Finally, a note on the posted PPTS: You will see that the pdfs of the PPTs have note spaces. You may find it helpful to print up the PPTs and bring them to class so that you can use the note sections to add in comments and extra materials that come up in class. Also, NOTE that sometimes I make last-minute changes to the PPTs based on what has happened in class, so check for updated versions. These will be marked as “NEW” with a date on them.
SEPT 6: As promised, I have uploaded the assignment descriptions for the course, including the five homework assignments. These can all be found on the “Assignments” page. I have also uploaded three PPT presentations to the “Links/Docs” page: today’s WELCOME; an INTRODUCTION for the Renaissance and; an overview of Donne. The INTRODUCTION PPT includes discussion questions for Tyndale and More, so be sure to read it carefully to prepare for Monday’s class.
